About the artist

Deploying a variety of media such as drawing, video, photography, and installations, many of Mekhitar Garabedian’s works draw from his experience as an immigrant and play on the humour and poetic qualities he finds between languages, cultures, and histories. These two works are dedicated to Komitas (1869-1935), an Armenian priest, composer, and pioneer in ethno-musicology. During his lifetime, he transcribed thousands of folk songs — it is thanks to him that many Armenian, Turkish and Kurdish melodies are still preserved and known today. The musicians are taken from a book on medieval miniatures, and each holds a different instrument: canon, lutna, naghara, tmbuk, payterov dhol, blul, tavigh and camancha. Born in 1977 in Aleppo, Syria, Mekhitar Garabedian currently lives and works in Antwerp.
