Seyni Awa Camara, the “Potter of Casamance”, was born in 1939 in Diouwent, near Oussouye in Senegal. Revealed to the Western world by the exhibition Les Magiciens de la Terre, of Jean Hubert Martin, which took place at the Centre Pompidou in 1989, stimulating the eyes of collectors and gallery owners who saw in her an authentic, spiritual, mystical creator fitting in well with a certain idea of Africa, she remains this almost shamanic woman, timeless and unclassifiable. Her mother intro- duced her to the traditional techniques of pottery when she was still a child, but she progressed very speedily away from the utilitarian nature of objects to asserting them as an aesthetic research into content and form.
